Saved by the Lens #4
The Getty Villa
This past weekend I got to visit the Getty Villa with M (she prefers to remain anonymous). We started the day at the Santa Monica Stairs, which I admit, I had never been to. Being the competitor that I am, I climbed the stairs in a rapid pace, but let me tell you, the soreness is real! Afterward, we went to the Farmers Market in Brentwood, then walked up and down Montana Ave, in Santa Monica, before spending the rest of the afternoon at the Getty Villa. It was a beautiful day, and super relaxing. People watching is what I love to do, and although M isn’t big on staying in one place just to observe people, having the camera with me allows me to observe quickly and capture these moments. Lately I’ve refrained from getting too close to the subjects, preferring to take photos from a distance rather than in your face street photos, and it allows me to remain connected with M as she feels my presence versus me preoccupied in getting the image. Yet as I continue to grow with my imagery, and stepping back to tell the complete story, its teaching me a lot about the stories I share and how I see the world. This kind of reflection, along with journaling, has helped me become a more complete artist. Time will tell if I’ll ever be recognized as a complete photographer, so be it. The only way to know is to create a body of work, and put it out there for the world to see.
